Spring tonic

What better antidote to snow and rain than a visit to a greenhouse! I was smart and left my money at home and just wandered around enjoying the moist warm air and the colorful flowers. I was very tempted by these *designer* baskets (with price tags to match), but think I could put together something just as nice with things I already have once I find some little pansies that need a home. I feel a little silly taking photos in a public place, but find them useful later when I’m looking for ideas and inspiration for container plantings.

  1. I can relate to your comment about feeling silly taking pictures in public places! I try to be sneaky about it.

A visit to a nursery is always a pleasure.

  2. Pansies are my favorite spring flower! I always buy or make a bowl of yellow with purple centers and blue with dark centers. Pansies have always reminded me of faces! Those are really neat containers- especially the yellow egg with little greens growing in it in the container up front.

  3. I could smell the sweet moisture of the greenhouse. Like you, I just can’t bring myself to pay those steep prices, but I’ve been very very tempted:0)

  4. Oh my… how very beautiful Laura! You can just stare at that forever soaking in the colors and stark beauty of them all. A spring tonic indeed!

  5. Beautiful photo of gorgeous flowers – well worth feeling silly taking it.
I know what you mean. I feel like I should hide the fact I’m taking photos. Oh well, maybe I’ll get used to it as I do it more.

  6. Gorgeous!!! I love getting gifts of spring daffodils. I can put them in my garden when they are done and enjoy them for years to come. Utterly magical!

  7. Laura, I agree, and I take photos to copy all the time. Those baskets are lovely, and that photo makes me feel good.

  8. It’s nice to see such vivid colors.-I’ve been trying to do a little flower gardening myself. The only thing I don’t like about container gardening is that you have to water them more often.

-I recently learned that Sedum gets really big-I think I planted too much.

  9. My first reaction opening your blog–woooo, what wonderful colors.
Oh, I know completely what you mean about designer prices on those designer baskets. I go and look, get ideas, then cobble together a bunch of flowers in pots and stick them in my own basket. They look very designer to me, thank you very much.

  10. Laurie: It is nice to see such color when outside things are pretty drab.

Mary: It’s pretty hard to be sneaky with a big camera! I would love to get in there one day with my close-up lens, but how?

Lynne: I love pansies too and usually plant them in the fall with kale.

Susan: I’m planning myself sick I think.

Cathy: I usually treat myself to one of these, but wait until late May when I can put the basket outside and there’s a chance that it will survive for a month or two! I also always buy one or two as gifts for friends who appreciate flowers.

Madcap: Nice to see you by here. Hope Spring finds its way to you soon. Miss your posts.

Jayne: Sort of takes one’s mind off of things, don’t they?

Larry: The butterflies will appreciate all that sedum!

KGMom: Kobbling something together is what I try to do also! The photos really help.
