My garden favorites, the goldenrod and joe-pye, did their thing and were promptly cut down weeks ago as part of the fall clean-up the DH insists on doing. His pride and joy, the tropicals, took their sweet time in blooming this year and are now flirting with frost.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_YcXlERVmPdE\/SP_NcenOSvI\/AAAAAAAACII\/tOcYt3WJA4o\/s800-h\/trumpetpink.jpg\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260148778929638130\" style=\"DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/trumpetpink-200x300.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">Every day he debates bringing them into the basement for safety from the threat of frost or leaving them outside to continue the show they&#8217;ve waited so long to put on.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_YcXlERVmPdE\/SP_NUv0q5QI\/AAAAAAAACIA\/08LKO0kQ_cY\/s800-h\/trumpetwhite.jpg\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260148646110487810\" style=\"DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 214px; TEXT-ALIGN: center\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/trumpetwhite-300x200.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">His dad had a passion and a green thumb for growing Angel&#8217;s Trumpet&#8217;s. We&#8217;ve not been able to grow these trees to half the size his dad could, but we don&#8217;t have a greenhouse to overwinter them in, either. He hauls them into the basement for the winter instead and practices a sort of benign neglect with a dose of water every so often hoping that they&#8217;ll go dormant and wake up the following spring.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_YcXlERVmPdE\/SP_NM0ryv3I\/AAAAAAAACH4\/ZmUc9NXCHmM\/s800-h\/trumpetyellow.jpg\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260148509976477554\" style=\"DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/trumpetyellow-200x300.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">If you know these flowers, you know how strong their scent can be on a hot summer night. We&#8217;ve not had that this year as they started blooming so late, but still they&#8217;re beautiful in their own exotic way. Each day the blossoms change shape and color, unfurling in the late afternoon light.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_YcXlERVmPdE\/SP_NEBPY9zI\/AAAAAAAACHw\/yrmRy5xWWHw\/s800-h\/trumpetdouble.jpg\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260148358728185650\" style=\"DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/trumpetdouble-200x300.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">We try out a new variety, or color, or flower shape each year and are often surprised. This one, a double, revealed a flower within a flower.
