{"id":176,"date":"2011-03-15T04:16:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T04:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/?p=176"},"modified":"2014-10-01T03:04:13","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T03:04:13","slug":"considering-scaup-with-crossley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/?p=176","title":{"rendered":"Considering Scaup with Crossley"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6141.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6141-300x200.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>So there&#8217;s been this huge flock of Scaup resting at the base of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/sunset-oceanic-bridge-navesink-river-new-jersey#331.40,0.00,62.5\">Oceanic Bridge<\/a> between Rumson and Middletown the last couple weeks&#8230; quite the spectacle for local folks who never pay attention to such a thing.<\/p>\n<p><i>Busy with tennis and lunch dates, you know.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>*snark*<\/p>\n<p>I was glad to find people there, glad to find &#8220;normal&#8221; people curious about this big conglomeration of ducks that seemed to appear from nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>The great mass of them were Scaup sp. with a couple Red Heads mixed in, Brant and Ruddies at the fringes of the flock.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6148.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_6148-300x199.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>While I &#8220;know&#8221; that these are mostly Greater Scaup, I wondered what wisdom Crossley might have to offer&#8230;<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Photo-2B6.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Photo-2B6-300x225.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Lesser on the left&#8230; Greater on the right<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Greater is known to form large flocks in winter in coastal estuaries.<\/p>\n<p><i>Check.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Frequently mixes with very similar Lesser Scaup.<\/p>\n<p><i>Durn.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes obvious, but at other times separating from Lesser a real head-scratcher.<\/p>\n<p><i>Yep.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Iridescent green head often appears black, but rarely purple.<\/p>\n<p><i>Check!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I finally saw that purple iridescence on a couple Lessers on Lake Como this weekend and it&#8217;s so very obvious when the light is right&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i>(one hardly needs to pay attention to the bulgy cheeks of the Greaters that Crossley mentions!)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m enjoying sorting through the local waterfowl with the <a href=\"http:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/titles\/9384.html\">new Crossley Guide<\/a>&#8230; have you bought a copy yet?
