Clamshells and pebbles populate the landscape; bits of driftwood and beachgrass offer them cover. <\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/plovervlab.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/plovervlab-200x300.jpg\" width=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Save the occasional wayward Lab that can&#8217;t resist a dip in their private ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>(Dogs are not allowed on oceanside beaches during nesting season. Many people ignore this rule.)<\/p>\n<p><i>Grrr. <\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackline.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackline-300x200.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The northernmost tip of Sandy Hook, by contrast, is like another world&#8230; beachgoers rarely wander this far; the beach outside the plovers&#8217; protected nesting area is littered with debris&#8230;   <\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage1.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage1-300x185.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Piping Plovers, Least Terns, Skimmers, Oystercatchers&#8230; they all nest here, in privacy, in the middle of the garbage that washes, butt up, on their doorstep.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage2.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage2-300x200.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Far above the tide line, they carve out their nest scrapes among the scattered wrack and shells; they shelter their young in the shadow of discarded tv sets&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage3.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage3-300x185.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>rusted oxygen(?) tanks&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage5.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage5-300x200.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>car bumpers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This last is kinda gross &#8211; don&#8217;t look!<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage4.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wrackgarbage4-300x200.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>and decomposing dogs washed ashore from God-knows-where.<\/p>\n<p><i>(I never did find any Plovers here&#8230; but the 8-10 reported recently had plenty of places to hide!)<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/osprey1.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somewhereinnj.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/osprey1-300x185.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I think we owe them better; I believe the cost of privacy for endangered and threatened species shouldn&#8217;t be as high as this!<\/p>\n<p>Every bit of garbage ends up somewhere&#8230; we all know this. A lot of NYC trash ends up at Sandy Hook.
