Geese police

Most of the coastal ponds I visit for ducks are in the middle of residential neighborhoods… prime neighborhoods within sight of the ocean. I always get a laugh at the canada geese, brant, and coot feeding on those perfectly manicured lawns that sit opposite the most productive ponds. Boy it must really piss those people off to have all that goose crap on their grass and sidewalks!

There’s a price to pay for that nice water view, I guess.

Nevermind the birders wandering around all the time.

Last week I watched this guy from one these houses patrolling his yard with a stick. Back and forth he walked, waving his big stick along the sidewalk, to keep the geese away.

And I think I have too much time on my hands…

This bit of drivel, btw, is my 1000th post. Hm. Think maybe it’s time for me to finally shut up?

  1. That’s not funny!

(it is funny about the geese, but don’t stop the writing)

Like you, I pull back when I have something to mull over (thus my quiet in the past few months). But I am here everyday reading your entries.

I think that many people who have been blogging for years are finding that they enjoy the writing, but that maybe the blogosphere doesn’t offer the same rewards as it did in the beginning. The NYTimes talks about Twitter coming on the scene, so that people can have more immediate connection with others.

You strike me as someone who enjoys the deliberate process of the writing, and the picture taking, and the community of birders and such that are attracted to blogs.

    Here’s to 1000 more.

  2. How will we be reminded of the pretty of New Jersey???

Once we lived in Az for a bit and the garage doors are usually vinyl. One guy across the street spent a whole day putting car wax on his doors and then polished them every Saturday morning!

  3. 1000 posts? That’s amazing Laura! I hope you plan to continue for many more.
I would guess living close to the water means you’re going to get waterfowl in your yard–too bad the guy with a stick doesn’t understand that. I would love to dig a large pond in my backyard to try and attract some geese and ducks!
