1/17/07 Mid-week bunny fix

Peeper’s favorite perch is my hope chest by the window. I’m not sure what she’s watching out there, other than traffic, but she loves to sit there watching. A car pulling up or someone walking along my neighbor’s driveway just outside the window sends her racing back to her cage with a Thump! Once I tried to sneak a photo of her in this pose from outside the window and she totally freaked out and Thumped! at me for a couple of hours. Silly rabbit! She insists that the window be open, even in this morning’s cold, otherwise she will paw and scratch at the window until I open it. If you have a sharp eye you might notice that the dangly things on the mini-blinds have been *altered* by somebunny’s teeth.

and for Suzanne from PetBunny, who died today:

DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE WHO CARE FOR ANIMALS
I Am an Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God’s creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection
I have bought rabbit, dog, & cat food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
I have Animal Friends and friends who have Animal Friends
I don’t often use the word “pet”
I notice those lost at the road side
And my heart aches
I will hand raise a field mouse
And make friends with a vulture
I know of no creature unworthy of my time
I want to live forever if there aren’t animals in Heaven
But I believe there are!
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?
We may be master of the animals,
But the animals have mastered themselves
Something people still haven’t learned
War and abuse make me hurt for the world
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for humankind
We rescuers and lovers of animals are a quiet but determined army
And making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan/stray, or surrendered
animal
Nothing more rewarding than saving a life
No higher recognition than watching them thrive
There is no greater joy than seeing a rabbit, cat, or dog play
who only days ago, was too weak to eat
I am an Animal Rescuer
My work is never done
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full
In the game of life, I have already won!

Rest well friend. May your reunions at the Bridge be joyous.

Suzanne helped many rabbits find new homes. The 3 bunnies that she’s left behind have been adopted, sight unseen, by other members of PetBunny, and will be transported from Suzanne’s home in California to various points in the country by other members of PetBunny who volunteered to drive or fly them there. Suzanne volunteered for a few trips like this herself to get a bunny to a new home.

  1. What a sweet and enriched life you gave Peeper when you brought her home. I wonder what she’s thinking when she looks out the window. She must really like the fresh air.

  2. Thanks for sharing the photo of Peeper! I bet she is telling everybun how wonderful it is in your home and getting upset that you are stopping her. 😉 We actually bought a cat-window perch for our two bigger (older) buns, and they love watching the kids and dogs go by.

  3. Laura, that poem is worth saving (I did save it!) Before you answered my question, I was wondering what the picture of Peeper would look like on the outside of the window? We bought a window seat for our dogs to look through the bedroom window. They deserve a comfy view.

  4. I’m going to google PetBunny right after this- Suzanne sounds as though she was a pretty special person in the world of rabbit rescue.

These mid-week bunny fix posts have me increasingly curious about bunnies as pets. We had a large black Flemish hare named Selma Busynose who lived outside in a hutch and she certainly was a “pet” but we never had one who had free run of the house. I love their personalities and activities as described in your posts and photos.

  5. I guess I should be happy that my cats don’t make me open the windows for them! 🙂

Our parakeet likes to look out the window too.

  6. A beautiful poem and a lovely tribute. I’m sure Suzanne is frolicking with the bunnies even now.

Peeper looks very contented with her own personal “TV.” What? No popcorn?

  7. What a nice tribute…I have seen this (or something similar) on a rescue site. People who volunteer to rescue and find homes for pets are special people.

    Peeper is such a cutie.

  8. Thanks to all.

Peeper is a strange one – still a little scared of me and not too interested in being petted, but she likes to get out of her cage and run around and stare out the window. Oh! And eat apples and carrots – she loves them both! Bananas (which most every bunny loves) make her scrunch up her nose, at least as much as a bunny can. She hasn’t learned to like them yet.

Only my big Flemmies are really *free run* Vicki – the others live in pens or a cage and get out for a few hours each day. The flemmies are very well-behaved mostly, but the others are too prone to get into trouble.

  9. Oh I just love the pics of Peepers looking out the window. She is aptly named.

That was a lovely tribute to Suzanne. I am devastated for her family. She was a wonderful person who will be missed dearly. PB is a wonderful family, and once again, though I shouldn’t be by now, amazed at how they rally when one of their own needs help.

  10. How sad. I am glad everyone has banded together to take care of her furkids. I liked the reference about the bridge reunions.

  11. I couldn’t get through the dedication. I am such a wuss. That is the dearest picture of Peepers and the ‘window-watching’ account is so darling! Do you know of any other rabbits in the universe that do this? Unbelievable.
    God bless tender, caring people.

  12. Cathy: Hi. I’m sure there must be other bunnies who like to window watch. Don’t know any personally though! I wonder if she doesn’t like to look out because maybe she used to lived outdoors? I don’t know anything about her past – she came to me as a stray from the neighborhood.
