Cranky catfish

If I had a tunnel to hide in today I would do it.

Do the people you work with ever make you feel like you were dropped here from some other planet? Like their mindless drivel about shoes and vacations and ex-husbands is some foreign language that hurts your ears to listen to? Like their screwy perspective on the world might be contagious and you should run screaming from your desk before you’re infected with their stupidity?

Do I need to think about a new job?

😉

This rant brought to you courtesy of seasonal affective disorder. Cheerful and sweet Laura may return tomorrow after a night under the grow light.

  1. Yes. Yes. Yes. and Maybe.
The drivel makes my eyes just about cross and roll back in my head it is *so* boring sometimes.
Hopefully you’ll feel better about it all tomorrow

  2. Laura, you are a gem. Speak out more often and share with us! I get sick of the stupid drivel, too, and roll my eyes, then hide in my office for a while. Tomorrow is another day. Take a deep breath and go in there and spread your sunshine.

  3. LOL!
I LIKE the cranky Laura sometimes. But the sweet Laura is just as nice.
I don’t get it…why don’t people talk about interesting things at work? I remember that you work with mainly women, right?
Are we not more than husbands, vacations, drivel???
    Yes, I say! YES!
Go get under the grow lamp, dear.

  4. These sentiments usually hit me by late Thursday afternoon or Friday. Keeping out of the lunchroom does extend my sanity, and everyone now knows I go for a walk at noon. Some people live in very small worlds. People like you belong in a bigger universe.

  5. So funny. Do you work with the general population? Sometimes working with the status quo puts the office crew in perspective. In the mean time let it out its healthy.

  6. Laura, you’re rant made me so thankful I work alone! Have you tried Christmas lights? No really – a string of those little colored Christmas lights helps with SAD. That, or a weekend trip to Florida, but Christmas lights are cheaper 🙂

    Love the catfish photo.

  7. Laura, you are not alone. I went to a parent club meeting last night at my school. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Is it any wonder that I’m not feeling up to par today after that sort of torture. Blech!

  8. OMG Laura- you are a hoot!
YES, YES, and YES!! Throw into that mix a repeater. You know the kind, someone who gets into your space and repeats the same amusing annecdote over and over because it just wasn’t MIND-NUMBING enough the first umpteen times!!
My husband work across a cube wall from a woman who is a real twit and she drives him up a wall. For Christmas I got him a set of those Bose noise blocking headphones! He LOVES them!

    love the hidey fish! 🙂

  9. I so feel for you!! I remember 2 years ago when I finally had it with the cubicle grouping I was sitting at. All day I was listening to “bar talk” as in conversations that were so trashy they were fit only in a bar! Not to mention that one of the idiots would go participate as an AOL inputter for “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” She would ask the group how she should be answering the questions!! AUGH.
    =:8

  10. Some days it takes a world of patience, doesn’t it. My biggest gift to myself on days like that is reminding myself to breathe.

As you know, I use a full spectrum lamp to deal with my seasonal affective disorder…it’s working quite well; maybe you should look into one…?

Hope today is going better than yesterday 🙂

  11. Hey there!!
i check out your blog occasionally for your interesting photos etc and to fulfull by seemingly growing boring life…..anyhooo, what an attack! i would have taken offense if you mentioned the crying co worker and her shoes!!

  12. Hi! Laura,

Nice Blog……. Interesting to know how you really feel about the people you work with. In these days and times I thought that having a Job you can go to and share womanily talks helps deter our minds from the CRAZY world we live and work in. Guess I was wrong, Life’s Too short… hope you have a better week.

  13. While sitting in the waiting room at my dentist’s office today, I listened to the patter and thought, “Hmmm… don’t think I could handle this.” Good thing I work from home. My dog and I don’t talk much and that seems to work out well for both of us. (-:

  14. Naturewoman: Thanks, yes it’s all better (not!)

Mary: Must be nice to have an office to hide in.

Spreading sunshine is not something that I regularly do, but I’ll work on it. 😉

Susan: Interesting is a matter of perspective, clearly.

Ruth: Small worlds is right, enough said.

Laurie: I think we all might benefit from a grow light: to grow patience and tolerance, etc.

    😉

Maggie: I’m not sure what you mean by *general population*? Makes it sound like a prison, which it often feels like!

LauraO: If we leave the Xmas lights up too long, the neighbors think we’re hillbillies! 😉

The catfish was pretty neat – he was in a display at the local environmental center – he looks pretty comfy in there doesn’t he?

    Jenn: You got it!

Liza: Oh I bet that was fun! Were you there in your official role as a teacher or as a parent?

Lynne: Umm,, I think there’s one (or two) of them here! Tedious! The majority of the people I work with are wonderful people, but you know, it’s the one or two that have a way of getting under your skin every minute of the work day.

Somebunny: No *bar talk* here – though I might appreciate it for the change of pace!

Randa: Thanks – of course this post was a joke, but a lamp that will make me less cranky sounds like a wonderful thing! How much time do you need to spend with it? I know that SAD isn’t a joke, for me just a handy excuse for my crankiness, but really I think it’s worth looking into – we can all need a little more healthy light at this time of year.

    Anonymous #1: What crying coworker????

Anonymous #2: Life is too short to fuss over shoes and what I write here to amuse myself. You know who I’m talking about, please!

Sandy: Hi! Don’t you want to tickle his whiskers!

FC: Glad for your laugh. It’s been years since I’ve sat around in the teacher’s lunchroom, but I’m sure the story is the same.

Bev: Yes! Really, this post wasn”t to crack on the people I work with, but to comment on my own state of being. Often I feel so out of touch with the people I come into contact with every day. Like Ruth said, some people are content with the little world they live in and let it consume them – maybe I’m doing the same!

  15. We’ve all been there Laura! “Mama said there’d be days like this!” Love that you can maintain a sense of humor about it all. Hugs to you!

  16. You are a riot! I think you’re right – the cold and dark don’t help as we struggle to deal with other’s inanities.
